The aftermath of trauma can negatively affect sexuality and the ability to experience pleasure. Clients may present with shame, loss of desire, and sexual dysfunction. Whether the trauma is from abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, radical religiosity, or infidelity, as a sex and couples’ therapist, helping clients with heal can be key in their trauma recovery. In sex and relationship therapy, clients can be coached to allow pleasure in their lives, and the resultant neurological experience of overriding trauma with pleasure can empower, stimulate healing, and create new connectivity in the brain and in relationship.
